Narail District Information
Narail is a district in South-western Bangladesh and a part of the Khulna Division. Narail district was established in 1984. It consists of 2 municipalities, 18 wards, 43 mahallas, 3 upazilas, 37 union parishads, 445 mouzas and 649 villages. The upazilas are Narail Sadar, Lohagara and Kalia. Former thana Naragati has converted into upazila recently. Municipalities are Narail Sadar and Kalia.
Area: 990.23 km².
Boundary: Narail district is bounded by Magura District on the north, Khulna District on the south, Faridpur District and Gopalganj District on the east, and by Jessore District on the west.
Weather: Annual average temperature of this district is maximum 37.1C, minimum 11.2C. Annual rainfall is 1467 mm.
Main rivers: Madhumati, Nabaganga, Bhairab, Chitra and Kajla.
Main beels: Chachuri Beel.
Populations : 689021; male 54.22%, female 45.78%.
Religion: Muslim 75.56%, Hindu 24.31% and others 0.13%.
Literacy rate: 35.65%; male 42.23% and female 28.99%.
Major educational institutions: There are 1 technical college, 17 general colleges,1 art school, 1 vocational school, 3 technical schools, 1 blind school and many other government, non government high schools, junior high schools, madrasa, primary schools are in Narail. Narail Victoria Collegiate School (1856), Narail Government Victoria College (1886), Kalia Pilot High School (1865), Baraipara Primary School (1850), Babra Primary School (1895) are some of the notable and older educational institutions of Narail.
Main occupations : Agriculture 47.55%, agricultural labourer 18.02%, business 10.92%, service 7.84% etc.
Main crops: Paddy, jute, wheat, oil seed, mustard, potato, sugarcane, kalai and khesari.
Main fruits: Mango, jackfruit, papaya, banana, black berry, coconut and betel nut.
Mills and factories: There are 1 Textile mill, 6 biscuit factories, 1 pen industry, 42 saw mills, 18 ice factorys, 45 rice and flour mills, 6 lathe machines, 73 welding and 4 printing pressesin this district .
Main exports : Betel leaf, coconut, betel nut and shrimp.
Transportation: Main mode of transportation is bus. Road and waterways are commonly used way for communication for this district.
Narail Town: This small town stands on the bank of the Chitra river. It consists of 9 wards and 24 mahallas. The area of the town is 28.89 sq km with a population of 36785. Among them male are 51.34%, female 48.66%. Literacy rate among the town people is 51.7%. It is the administrative and business center of Narail district where the offices of the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent Police, Additional District Magistrate and other local government officials of Narail district are located.

Marks of War of Liberation: There are 2 mass graves in this district as the symbol of glorious 1971.
Historical events : Indigo Revolt was organised in this district during 1859-60. This district has glorious history of Tebhaga movement (1946 ). Narail district was liberated on 10 December, 1971.
