Magura is a district of Khulna Division.in the South-Western Bangladesh. Magura sub-division was established in 1945 and it became a district in 1984. Magura district consists of 4 upazilas, 1 municipality, 18 wards, 61 mahallas, 36 union parishads, 537 mouzas, and 700 villages. 4 sub-divisions / upazilas are:
• Magura Sadar Upazila
• Mohammadpur Upazila
• Shalikha Upazila
• Sreepur Upazila

Area: 1048 km2

Boundary: Magura district is bounded by Rajbari district on the north, Jessore and Narail districts on the south, Faridpur district on the east and Jhenaidaha district on the west.

Weather: Annual average temperature is maximum 37.1°C, minimum 11.2°C

Annual rainfall: 1467 mm.

Main Rivers: Gorai, Madhumati, Kumar, Nabaganga , Fatki etc.

Population: 811160; male 50.56%, female 49.44%

Religion: Muslim 77.89%, Hindu 21.89% and others 0.22%.

Literacy rate: Average literacy 28.5%. Among them male are 35.2% and female 20.9%.

Main occupations: Agriculture 51.26%, agricultural labourer 19%, commerce 9.37%, service 6.01% etc.
Marks of War of Liberation: Magura district has Mass grave in Magura PTI compound, WAPDA canal, Binodpur Bazar, Galakata Bridge (Chhaigharia). Memorial monument is situated in PTI main gate adjacent to the Magura Bishwa Road.

History: The remnants of Neelkuthi at Hajrapur, Boroi, Amtail Nahati of Magura carries the marks of extensive indigo cultivation. During the War of Liberation the people of Magura ehad a great contribution. The heroic role of female freedom fighter Lutfunnahar Helena and her death in the hands of the Razakars are proudly remembered by people of Magura.

Famous Educational institutions: Magura district has a primary teacher’s training institute, 1 technical institute, 1 nursing institute, 15 colleges and many other educational institutions.

Magura Town: Magura became a district town in 1984. The area of the town is 22.95 sq km with a population of 85216. Among them male are 51.69%, female 48.31%. It consists of 18 wards and 61 mahallas. The literacy rate among the town people is 47.6%.
