Narsingdi is a district in central Bangladesh which is a part of the Dhaka Division. The name Narsingdi, which translates as “lion man” in Bangla, is named after an ancient king who was believed as strong as lion. The district became a district in 1984 and before that it was a subdivision under greater Dhaka district. The district consists of 6 upazilas, 3 municipalities, 27 wards, 55 mahallas, 69 union parishads, 652 mouzas, 1060 villages. The 6 upazilas are BELABO, MONOHARDI, SHIBPUR, RAIPURA, PALASH and NARSINGDI SADAR.

Area: 1140.76 sq km.

Population: 1891281. Among them male are 50.77%, female 49.23%.

Religion; Muslim 93.28%, Hindu 6.40%, Christian 0.03%, Buddhist 0.03%.

Ethnic communities: 0.11% and others 0.15%.

Literacy rate: Average literacy 29.57%. among them male are 35.03% and female 23.66%.

Weather: Annual average temperature maximum is 36°C, minimum 12.7°C. Annual rainfall is 2376 mm.

Boundary: Narsingdi district is bordered by Kishoreganj in the north & north-east, by Brahmanbaria in the east & south-east, Narayanganj at south & south-west and by Gazipur in the west. Subdivisions

Distance from capital: Narsingdi is located 50 km north-east of (capital city).

Major rivers: The Meghna, The Shitalakkha, The old Brahmaputra and Haridhoa.

Communication facilities: This district has communication facility of Water way,railway and by road. It is near to the capital, and also has good communication with other districts. two most busiest rail route of the country (Dhaka-Chittagong & Dhaka-Sylhet) goes through Narsingdi district.

Main crops :Paddy, jute, wheat, sugarcane and vegetables.

Main fruits: Banana,Jackfruit, mango, papaya, pineapple, black berry, guava, banana, olive and litchi.

Main exports: Paddy, bamboo, pineapple, guava, vegetables, lungi, shari and fertiliser.

Main occupations: Agriculture 42.42%, commerce 13.35%, agricultural labourer 11.37%, handloom 5.83% etc.

Marks of War of Liberation: There are 1 Memorial, 4 mass grave and one mass killing site in this district.

Educational institutions: In this university there are 1 university college, 1 primary teacher’s training institute, 4 government college, 18 non-government college,8 government high school, 156 non-government high school and many other junior high school, madrasa, government primary school, non-government primary schools etc. there are also 1 youth development training centre and 2 technical college .: Narsingdi University College is the only University college in this district.

Narsingdi Town: Narshindi town is the centre of the Narsingdi district which consists of 9 wards and 33 mahallas. Narsingdi municipality was established in 1972 and it became a district town in 1984. The town is only one our distance from Dhaka. The area of the town is 14.76 sq km with a population of 42023. Among them male are 54.52%, female 45.48%. The density of population per sq km is 2847. Literacy rate among the town people is 51.6%.

Specialty in the Economy of Narsingdi:
Narsingdi is the only district in Bangladesh that does not depend only on agriculture. The district is the home to many textile mills.
The Largest powerplant of Bangladesh (Ghorashal power plant) under (PDB) is situated in palash Upazilla.
A gas field named Narsingdi gas is located in the Shibpur upazila under Narsingdi district which was discovered by Petrobangla in 1990.
Narsingdi has a lot number of jute mills.
Narsingdi is famous for Quality banana.
