Jamalpur is a district in Dhaka Division and in the northern part of Bangladesh. This district was established in 1978. This district consists of 7 upazilas, 6 municipalities, 68 union parishads, 57 wards, 224 mahallas and 1532 villages. The upazilas are jamalpur sadar, bakshiganj, dewanganj, islampur, madarganj, melandaha and sarishabari. The municipalities are Jamalpur Sadar, Sarishabari, Melandaha, Madarganj, Islampur and Dewanganj.

Area: 2031.98 sq km.

Population: 2089366. Among them male are 50.58%, female 49.42%.

Religion: Muslim 97.74%, Hindu 1.98%, Christian 0.10%, Buddhist 0.04% and others 0.14%

Literacy rate: Average literacy 39% male 53% and female 25%.

Ethnic communities: Garo, Hodi, Kurmi and Mal.

Boundary: This district is bounded by Meghalaya State of India, KURIGRAM and SHERPUR districts on the north, TANGAIL district on the south, MYMENSINGH and Sherpur districts on the east, JAMUNA river, BOGRA, SIRAJGANJ and GAIBANDHA districts on the west.

Weather: Annual average temperature of Jamalpur is maximum 33.3°C, minimum 12°C. Annual rainfall is 2174 mm.

Main rivers: Jamuna, OLD BRAHMAPUTRA, Jhenai, Banar, Jirjira, Chhatal.

Educational institutions: There are one law college, 1 homeopathy college, 1 agricultural research centre in this district. This district has 5government College, 20 Non-government College, 7 government secondary school, 224non-government secondary school, 113 madrasa, 38 junior high school, 588 government primary school and 390 non-government primary schools. Ashek Mahmud College, Jamalpur Zila School, Singhajani Girl’s High School etc are some of the renowned institutions.

Main crops: Paddy, jute, sugarcane, mustard seed, peanut, wheat, sweet potato, tobacco, betel leaf, chilly, pulse and vegetables.

Main fruits: Jackfruit, banana,pineapple,watermelon, latkon, tetul, kodbel, bangi etc.

Communication facilities: by road, railway and waterways.

Main exports: Jute, tobacco, mustard seed, peanut, leather, egg, pulse and betel leaf.

Main occupations: Agriculture 44.01%, transport 1.39%, fishing 1.26%, agricultural labourer 18.6%, wage labourer 2.86%, commerce 10.62%, service 10.84% and others 10.42%.

Distance from Dhaka: 140 km north of Dhaka.

Jamalpur Town
Jamalpur town is a small calm town with 12326 wards and 80 mahallas. The town is located on the Brahmaputra River. The municipality was established in 1869. The area of the town is 53.28 km² with a population of 116754. Among them male are 51.06%, female 48.94%. Density of population is 2191 per km². Literacy rate among the town people is 43.60%. The town has a railway junction and an important market for the rice, sugarcane, jute, tobacco, and mustard produced in the region.
