Everest Base Camp Trek Diary – Day 5 (Namche Bazar)
Due to the high altitude in Namche Bazar, I was having a little headache from last night. Also my knees were still a little sore. My room offered a great view of Mount Thamserku so spending time in the room wasn’t an issue.
By afternoon I was feeling a lot better and went for a walk in that layered town of Namche Bazar. The town is built on one side of Namche hill and is surrounded by mountains. It is built in such a crescent shape that if you stand on the west cliff/side of the town, the east cliff will be right in front of you.
This is the pre tourist season in Khumbhu. That is why even though there are many shops and beautiful cafes in town, the streets are empty. I hear that this is the last place to stock up on any missing supplies before heading out on the trail again. My guide said “if you cant find something on Kathmandu, you can find it on Namche… If you have the money for it.” I thought I got a good deal on a knee compressor and an extra walking pole.
It had been raining lightly since morning and now clouds have started to take over the buildings. The mountains had already been covered with thick clouds. The evening at the dining hall was nice and warm with laughter and sharing of experiences. I learnt how to spell my name in Japanese from a lone trekker named Khazeu. Also two Indian trekkers heading down handed us some unused water purifying pills and some useful tips which was very kind of them.
At around 8pm it was time for me to return to my room and prepare for the hike the day after.
