Barguna is a district in the south-western Bangladesh and a part of the Barisal Division. Barguna thana was established at the end of the eighteenth century and was elevated to a sub-division in 1969 . Then the sub-division was turned into a district in 1984 finally. Barguna district consists of 5 upazilas, 38 union parishads, 238 mouzas, 560 villages, 4 municipalities, 44 wards and 49 mahallas. Five upazilas are: Amtali Upazila, Bamna Upazila, Barguna Sadar Upazila, Betagi Upazila and Patharghata Upazila.

Area: 1831.31 km².

Boundary: Barguna district is bounded on the north by the districts of Jhalkathi, Barisal, Pirojpur and Patuakhali. In the east, it borders the Patuakhali District. On the south, Barguna is bounded by the Patuakhali District, and the Bay of Bengal and on the western side, it borders Pirojpur and Bagerhat districts.

Major rivers: The Payra River, Bishkhali River and the Baleshwar River.

Population: 902,465.

Population density: 492 persons/km². Females 50.12%, male 49.88%.

Religion: Muslim 91.01%, Hindu 8.69%, Christian 0.04%, Buddhist 0.24% and others 0.02%.

Literacy rate: 40.14%; male 45.15%, female 35.05%.

Weather: Average annual temperature of this district is maximum 33.3°C and minimum 12.1°C. Annual rainfall is 2506 mm (1997).

Economical base: Agriculture.

Main occupations: Agriculture 50.53%, agricultural labourer 15.27%, commerce 10.01%, service 4.86% etc.

Main crops: Paddy and pulse.

Main fruits: Mango, jackfruit, banana, papaya etc.

Main exports: Betel leaf, pulse, banana, betel nut, molasses, shrimp.

Transportation facilities: Transportation is mainly by road and waterways.

Mills and factories: Rice mill saw mill, soap factory, flour mill, ice factory and pen factory are important mills and factories of Barguna.

Educational institutions: There are 13 colleges and many other secondary schools, junior schools, government, non-government primary schools and madrasas.

Barguna town: Barguna is a municipality town which was established in 1973.The town consists of 9 wards and 18 mahallas with an area of 15.57 sq km. The town has a population of 26484. Among them male are 53.89%, female 46.11%. The literacy rate among the town people is 56.6%.

Marks of War of Liberation: There are mass graves situated at two locations in Barguna. One is near the district jail and the other is near the Patharghata Launch Terminal.
